The GartH Pleasure Grounds
Based in Lingfield, Surrey, The Garth is a Grade II* listed house (Historic England ID: 287472) with a fascinating history dating back to the 18th Century and offers lots to explore for the whole family and visitors alike. We have open days in support of various charities throughout the year, as well as seasonal events and private visits. The Garden changes tremendously through the Seasons, so there's always something new to see.
Immerse yourself in our beautiful gardens, where you can wander along captivating story trails and discover the wonders of wildlife. Explore "Pleasure Grounds" designed by renowned architect Walter Godfrey, which surround the magnificent Garth Workhouse. Explore beautifully designed Temples and garden sections inspired by regions across the Mediterranean and Asia, including French, Italian, Greek and Oriental gardens.
The Tea Room Gallery, showcases fascinating letters between Stanley Hazell and Godfrey, along with historic artefacts found in the grounds, photographs and original drawings. Learn about the intriguing past of workhouses, once seen as symbols of degradation. Discover the hardships endured by residents, including meager diets and harsh living conditions. Uncover the stories of boys in Lingfield workhouse, who were taught valuable skills like shoemaking and hat-making. You might even stumble upon artefacts like straw hats, bonnets, and moleskin waistcoats in our gardens.
